Introduction Jamuna Gasser

We met the designer Jamuna Gasser for an interview.

"With my designs I try to inspire joy by creating very aesthetic objects that I give a functional, innovative and durable aspect. Simplicity is an important keyword for me, which is clearly evident in my design language."

Jamuna Gasser is a Swiss designer with Indian roots. She has been working as an independent designer since her Industrial Design studies at the University of Art and Design in Basel. Furniture, home and kitchen accessories are her specialty, with a focus also on making a product easy to produce, space-saving to transport or store, and easy to assemble in a few steps.

Tell us something about yourself: Who are you? How would you describe yourself?
As the daughter of a Swiss-French mother and an Indian father, I grew up very multicultural, speak five languages and love to bring together the enriching influences of different cultures. My love for aesthetics and detail comes through not only in my passion for cooking or music, but of course in design.

What does design mean to you?
Design offers me the opportunity to combine my different interests by creating products that enrich, simplify and beautify people's lives.

What is especially important to you when choosing colors and materials?
I like to be inspired by nature when choosing colors and materials. I also like to create contrast in my products by combining different materials, textures or hues.

How would you describe your creative process?
My creative process starts with getting an overview and informing myself about the already existing products, current trends and standards. I record my ideas mainly in the form of sketches. While sketching, new ideas come to me and I can usually already sort out what works very well or less well and thus organize and concretize my ideas. Mockups and prototyping play a crucial role in the detailed development of my products in order to test functions, shapes and proportions.

What are the biggest challenges in the everyday life of a creative?
In my everyday creative life, it is sometimes a challenge to have to decide between many good ideas for one idea and thus let go of great concepts. Nevertheless, this decision is part of the design process and makes it easier for me to further explore the chosen idea.

Thank you, Jamuna, for your time and the exciting insight.
